Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best 2 Way Satellite Messenger

Choosing the right satellite messenger requires evaluating your specific outdoor needs and budget. We outline the essential factors that determine which device suits your adventure best.

Satellite Network Coverage

Different devices use Iridium or GlobalSTAR networks. Iridium provides global coverage including polar regions while GlobalSTAR may have gaps. Check maps to ensure the network reaches your target adventure areas.

Always verify network maps match your travel destinations before buying.

Battery Life Duration

Battery performance varies from 14 days to 350 hours depending on mode. Extended trips require models with rechargeable lithium batteries and power saving features. Consider if you can recharge or need multi-week endurance.

Prioritize battery life that matches the length of your longest trip.

Message Capabilities

Some messengers send only text while others support photos or emails. If you want to share visual updates you need smartphone pairing. Check if preset check-ins save your text message allotment.

Choose devices that support your desired media types.

SOS Emergency Features

Interactive SOS connects to 24/7 coordination centers for help. Some models let you confirm receipt of SOS alerts with rescue teams. Ensure the service includes medical assistance or field rescue options.

Look for interactive SOS that allows two-way crisis communication.

Device Durability Rating

Outdoor devices need IP ratings or military standards like MIL-STD-810. IP68 ensures protection against dust and water immersion. Rugged designs withstand drops and extreme temperature conditions.

Select a rating that matches your environmental hazards.

Smartphone Integration

Modern devices often require apps for full features. Apps enable photo sharing and group chats but consume phone battery. Verify compatibility with your phone OS version for smooth pairing.

Ensure app support works with your existing smartphone setup.

Navigation Tools

Built-in compass and TracBack routing assist wayfinding without a map. Digital compass shows heading even when stationary. GPS tracking allows sharing your route with contacts.

Pick devices with routing features if you hike complex terrain.

Service Plan Costs

Monthly plans cover airtime and SOS alerts. Some include unlimited check-ins while others charge per message. Check cancellation policies to avoid long-term contracts if you plan short trips.

Compare total annual cost including device and subscription.

How to Use and Care for Your 2 Way Satellite Messenger

Charge the device fully before any outdoor excursion. Connect to the provided USB cable and ensure the battery reaches 100%. Avoid using it until the initial charging cycle is complete.

Pair the device with your smartphone app upon arrival. Download the app and create an account to activate SOS services. Follow the on-screen steps to sync contacts and check-in messages.
